Oh Babe, I Hate To Go, Day #55

One of the first songs I taught my campers this summer was “Leaving on a Jet Plane.” Our theme was “Soaring through the Summer,” and the song just fit. It’s amazing to me how many generations can pick up Peter, Paul and Mary’s songs, and keep those songs with them throughout their lives. “Leaving on a Jet Plane” became the camp favorite. Even the youngest campers would request “the kissing song.” This is music that has the power to touch souls. Peter, Paul and Mary were amazing song writers and many of their songs are not only on my personal play list, but they are songs that I teach on a regular basis.

Tomorrow is the last day of camp. It’s presence is so bittersweet. All year I look forward to camp: its energy, fun and friendships are all irreplaceable. When camp finally begins, I exude with joy. As it wears on though, I become exhausted. The schedule is grueling and all that energy really can take a lot of a person. By the end, I feel like I’ve run a marathon. There is part of me that is so relieved to see its end, but then there is part of me that is so sad to say goodbye to wonderful people. It happens every summer.

So if you see me moping around next week, please understand that I am decompressing from 2-1/2 months of wonderful. I will enter the school year with new found energy, but while all of the teachers are getting their classrooms ready, I’ll be refocusing my energy for the school year.

I will always be a camp girl at heart. I will always love Peter, Paul and Mary songs. I will always be so grateful for camp. “Oh babe, I hate to go.”
